Publicly owned golf courses provide affordable access to a sport which can otherwise be outwith the reach of the ordinary player. They are important green lungs in a large built-up area such as London, and would be a huge loss if turned over to housing (Report, 26 August), which, no doubt, would be beyond the means of the ordinary citizens who use them for sport at present.

Sally Rooney was photographed with an owl (Interview, 28 August). Why? Is it her pet? Does she like owls? Do owls feature in her new novel? Might have been interesting to find that out in the interview.
